Chaperones Needed!!

On Block Day this week we are going on a short field trip to the Zoo MAX Station.  We will be studying the core sample in the station below the surface as part of our unit on Earth Science.  The trip will basically take 1.5 hours, the time of a Block Period.  I need to have at least one chaperone per class period.   Can you help us out?

The details:  2nd and 4th periods will be going on Wednesday, May 11th.  Due to late opening that day, the time frame for 2nd period is 10:05-11:40 am and for 4th period it is 12:10-1:40 pm.  3rd Period will be going on Thursday, May 12th from 9:55-11:30 am.  We will walk to the MAX station, take the train 2 stops, study the core sample for approximately 45 minutes, and then return via the MAX.  I will provide your MAX fare.

The Week of 5/2-5/6

We should be having a lot of sunny weather over the next few weeks (at least that is what I have seen predicted), so get out there and make your sun and moon observations. 

Upcoming due dates/events:
Wed/Thurs 5/11-5/12:  Field Trip to Zoo MAX station
Tues 5/17:  Earth Science Project Due and start presentations
Tues 5/24:  Final Astronomical Observations Due
Wed/Thurs 5/25-5/26:  Energy Debate

• Monday 5/2:  Earth Science Project groups assigned.  Go to library for research and instruction on Annotated Bibliographies.
• Tuesday 5/3:  Computer Lab Research.  Get all of your resources and hand-written notes on 2 of them (at least 1/2 page each).  Hand out Field Trip Form.  Get signed by next Monday.
• Wednesday/Thursday 5/4-5/5:  Finish up Plate Tectonic Notes.  Volcanoes and Earthquakes.  Epicenter activity.   Read 22.5 and 22.6.
• Friday 5/6:  Rock Cycle and Rock Dating.  Layers of the Earth WS due Tuesday.  Read 22.3.

The Week of 4/25-4/29

1. Monday 4/25:  Turn in Mt. Nose Worksheet.  Notes on Eclipses.  Go to computer lab to do Asteroid Impact Activity.  In notebook make a data table with:  Type of Projectile, Size of Projectile, Target, Speed of Impact, and Results.
2. Tuesday 4/26:  Review for Chapter 25+26 Test.  There will be 5 short answers and 10-12 fill in the blank answers about basic vocabulary, Mt. Nose questions, and planet questions.  Introduce Earth Science Project.  Bring in text book Block Day.
3. Wednesday/Thursday 4/27-4/28:  Hand in 25+26 Review (crossword).  Take 25+26 Test.  Notes on Layers of the Earth (bring in your text please).  Submit your interest in Earth Science Topics.  Read 22.1.
4. Friday 4/29:  Notes on Plate Tectonics.  Read 22.4.

The Week of 4/18-4/22

Are you making any observations of the sun and moon?  Remember that I will be checking your observations this Friday.  I will be looking for at least 2 moon observations and at least one sunrise or sunset.   The forecast is looking pretty good for this week, so this is a good time to make as many observations as possible!  If you are reading this Sunday night, go out there right now and look for the moon!!!

• Monday 4/18:  Notes on Life Cycles of Stars (includes Black Holes!)  Read 26.3.
• Tuesday 4/19:  Formation of the Solar System.  Start Planet Worksheet.  Read 25.5.
• Wednesday/Thursday 4/20-4/21:  Video on the Planets, Sun, Comets, and Asteroids.  Name that pllanet group activity.  Phases of the moon and the Mt. Nose Technique for identifying times for each phase.  Work on Planet Worksheet and Mt. Nose Worksheet.  Planet WS due Friday.  Mt. Nose WS due Monday.  Read 25.2, 25.3, and 25.4 (can spread out over several days).
• Friday 4/22:  Check off preliminary observations (at least 2 moons and 1 sunrise or sunset).  Solar and lunar eclipses.  Hand out 25+26 Review Sheet.

The Week of 4/11/11-4/15/11 and Answers to Wave Review

I have just completed entering 3rd Quarter Grades and rounding where appropriate so that you can see your quarter grade on EdBox.  If you see anything that looks incorrect, let me know.   2nd and 4th Period students please remember to turn in your signed consent form for Ms. Mitchell.  It will be worth 5 points in the 4th quarter.

• Monday 4/11:  Go over Wave Review (see answers below).  Hand out and discuss 4th Quarter "Deal".  Hand out and explain Astronomical Observations Assignment.  Wave Test tomorrow.
• Tuesday 4/12:  Turn in Wave Review (only problems 1-5 with work need to be turned in).  Take Wave Test.  Introduction to the next unit.
• Wednesday/Thursday 4/13-4/14:  Introduction to Concept Mapping.  In class examples and then work on one in your group.  Go to Computer Lab to do Hubble website activity.  Read 26.5.
• Friday 4/15:  The Big Bang and Galaxies.  Read  26.4.

The Week of 4/4-4/8

I have just updated grades, so you can check them.  The last assignment that will count for the 3rd quarter is the Notebook Check that we do tomorrow (Monday).  Remember to have complete entries including Cornell Notes!  Also, remember that this week Block Days are on Tuesday and Thursday.

The Late Work/Extra Credit Deadline is Tuesday 4/6 by 12:45.

• Monday 4/4:  Notebook Check.  Turn in.  (I will do as many as I can during class, but be prepared to leave your notebook with me).  Refraction Lab.  Turn in by Block Day.
• Tuesday 4/5 and Thursday 4/7 (Block Days):  Notes on Refraction, Lenses, and the Human Eye.  Hand out Review Sheet for Test next Tuesday 4/12.  Grade Check. 
• Wednesday 4/6:  Diffraction and Spectroscope Lab to be done in Notebook.
• Frieday 4/8:  No School.  Teacher Work Day.
