End of 1st Quarter Deadline

Your deadline for late work and extra credit to be included in your 1st Quarter Grade is Monday, November 7 by 3:20 pm.  The only exception is that you may go to the SPARK lecture on the afternoon of November 7th and turn in your write-up by FLEX on Wednesday, November 9th.  Make sure that you check EdBox for missing assignments and ask me if you have any questions. 

October 31-November 11 (updated)

• Monday/Tuesday 10/31-11/1:  Turn in Counting Atoms.  Notes on Valence Electrons, Ionic Charges, and writing Ionic Compounds.  Bonding Worksheet, due Wednesday-Thursday.  Finish up Reading Work Sample.
• Wed/Thurs 11/2-11/3:  Check off Bonding Worksheet and go over.  Notes on Metals, Nonmetals, and Semimetals.  Covalent Bonding and Lewis Dot Structures.  Notebook Check on Friday (5th Period) and Monday (2nd Period).  Get missing entries for your notebook if needed and make sure that you have completed Cornell Notes!!  Work on Naming and Writing Compounds, Side 1.
• Fri/Mon 11/4-11/7:  Notes on Covalent Bonding, Metallic Bonding, and Lewis Dot Structures.  Notebook Check.  Using Model Kits to make molecules.  Chapter 6 Review.
• Tues/Wed 11/8-11/9:  Go over Chapter 6 Review and then turn in.  Turn in Writing and Naming WS if not already.  Take Chapter 6 Test.  Intro. to Chemical Reactions.  Endothermic vs. Exothermic Reactions.    Candy Demo.
• Thursday 11/10:  No School.  Teacher Grading Day for the end of the 1st Quarter!
• Friday 11/11:  No School.  Veterans Day.

Atom Model Project This Week!!

Don't forget that your Atom Model Project is due this week.  We will go to the library to do some research on Mon (5th) and Tues (2nd).  On Wed/Thurs, we will have the first 50 minutes of class to assemble your models, so if you need more time than that, make sure that you preassemble some of it at home.  You also need to make sure that you have your written information sheet prepared before Wed/Thurs.  Many students get this done when we are in the library, but if you don't get it done then, make sure that it is ready when we evaluate the models.   Make sure that you refer to the Atom Model Project hand-out (in the documents section of this website) to ensure that you have everything that you have included everything that you need.

Finally, I have found out that ISC Freshmen will be on a field trip Tuesday morning.  If you are going on the field trip and you have this class 2nd period, you will have to do your atom model research on your own.  To help you out, I have added 3 good websites for chemical elements.  Look in the links section to the left and you will see them.

October 17-October 28

• Mon/Tues 10/17-10/18:  Library Research on your Atom Model Project for half of the period.   Work on Atoms Worksheet during the 2nd Half.  Atoms Worksheet due Wed/Thurs.  Read 4.3.
• Wed/Thurs 10/19-10/20:  Are you ready to make your model?  Assemble your atom model during the first 50 minutes of class.  You also need to have your Info Sheet prepared.  During the next 15 minutes, we will evaluate models.  Finally, we will learn a bit about Electron Configuration during the last 15 minutes.  Read 5.1.  Turn in Atoms WS.
• Fri/Mon 10/21-10/24:  Notes on Families of the Periodic Table.  Work on Periodic Mystery Hand-out, due next class.  Also hand out Chapters 4+5 Review.   Electron Configuration WS for Extra Credit.  Read 5.2 and 5.3.
• Tues-Wed 10/25-10/26:  Turn in Periodic Mystery.  Science Reading Work Sample.  Afterwards, read from Bill Bryson books.  Questions on 4+5 Review?
• Thurs-Fri 10/27-10/28:  Last day for Extra Credit Electron Configuration.  Questions before test?  Turn in 4+5 Review.  Take 4+5 Test.  Do "Counting Atoms" worksheet for next class. 

Reminders

I have just updated grades for this class and there are many students with missing assignments!  If you have access to Edbox, please check your grades.  For students in 2nd period, do not worry that you don't have grades for the Carrot Poster and Early Work.  I will add those tomorrow (Monday).

If you have not yet turned in a Critical Reader, it is not too late to still get some solid points for it.  Also, don't forget that we are taking a Chapter 2+3 Test on Tuesday for 5th period and on Thursday for 2nd period.  I will ask you to turn in the 6 density problems from the review sheet showing work before you take the test.

October 3--14: Don't Forget Critical Reader Mon/Tues and Test Corrections Wed/Thurs!!

• Mon/Tues 10/3-10/4:  Turn in Critical Reader.  Last minute check of Carrot Lab Posters.  Walk-around evaluation of Carrot Lab Posters.  Notes on States of Matter and Kinetic Theory.  Hydrometer Lab.  Record the densities of the liquids in class, then make 2 graphs, and answer questions.  Lab due Fri 10/7 and Mon 10/10.  Read 3.1 and 3.3.
• Wed/Thurs 10/5-10/6:  Test Corrections during FLEX Wed/Thurs if you scored below a 24.5 on the test and/or missed a Significant Figures Problem.  Notes on Physical versus Chemical Changes.  Physical vs. Chemical Changes Lab.  Finish lab worksheet and turn in before leaving today.  Hand out Chapter 2+3 Review.  Read 2.3.
• Fri/Mon 10/7-10/10:  Turn in Hydrometer Lab and Graphs.  Jeopardy Review for Chapter 2+3 Test (next week).  Notes on Early Models of the Atom.
• Tues/Thurs 10/11 and 10/13:  Turn in 6 Density Problems from Review Sheet.  Take 2+3 Test.  Finish Early Models of the Atom and go over Atoms Nuts and Bolts.  Atoms Worksheet due Mon/Tues 10/17-10/18.
• Wed 10/12:  Testing Day.  Very short classes (20 minutes).  Introduce Atom Model Project.
• Fri 10/14:  Statewide Inservice Day.  No School.

SPARKS Lecture on Monday 10/3!

Remember that guest speaker, Matt Clark, Executive Director of the Johnson Creek Watershed Council will be speaking on the subject: "Salmon Restoration Project in the Metro Area's only Free Flowing Stream", on Monday from 3:45-4:30 pm in room 169.


You can get extra credit for your science class if you do the following:

1) Make sure that you get there early or on time as the door is closed when the room is full!

2) Sign in and/or get a signature from the speaker or science teacher present to verify that you were there

3) Write a 1-2 page summary of what the speaker talked about and YOUR RESPONSE to it. Please do not just turn in notes. Transcribe them into a more readable format to get the extra credit.
